About Me
Anthony Lun is a Hong Kong pop singer, songwriter, arranger, musical director who sings in Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and English.
Anthony Lun has been studying classical piano with his brother Andrew Lun at the age of 5, subsequently under the guidance of Miss Florence Der since high school. While in high school, he has shown his talent through appearing as a singer, accompanying himself at the piano. He appeared in many school performances, invited by Commercial Radio of Hong Kong to appear in their programs, participating in the Talent Quest competition show on the television and won. Anthony Lun is a graduate of La Salle College, Hong Kong (equivalent to Grade 1-12). In 1976, he went to further his piano and humanity studies at Santa Clara University, California, US, and subsequently obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree. Though his initial major was psychology, he eventually changed his major to music because he was most inspired by Doctor Robert Hagopian, the piano professor at the music department. He gave his first classical piano recital in 1979. Attempted to be a concert pianist, he left for the music graduate program at Ann Arbor, the University of Michigan in 1979, continued his piano studies under Benning Dexter, Louis Nagel and Gyorgy Sander. During his studies at the University of Michigan, he was acting as a teaching assistant in the piano department, through which he got the chance to broaden his teaching skill, and also realized that neither a teacher’s career or a concert pianist’s career was meant to be.
From 1982 to 1986, Anthony Lun was working as a singer pianist at the various exclusive lounges and night clubs in Detroit. His repertoire was mostly composed of top 40 american music, american standards, pop and R&B. Perhaps in those days it was rare to see an oriental singer pianist who can command vocally fluently in English, he was soon placed among one of the most sought out lounge artist in the Motown area.
Upon returning to Hong Kong in 1986, Anthony released an album, "Anthony Lun's Composition Collection". This was an album of 8 original compositions by Anthony Lun. He did the arrangement together with his musical friend Paul Munro. Since the album was to be released in Hong Kong, the lyrics would have to be in the language of Chinese. Without the thought of proper guidance to secure a better lyricist, Anthony made his feeble attempt to write the words. It was not so much as an attempt to showcase an all round talent, but more like a means to minimize the production budget. Anthony brought a new sound to the Hong Kong market, but the album was marred by the lyrics, as well as his R&B vocal style which was truly not acceptable to the common ears at then. The album drew attention as well as much criticism.
In the same year, his first major break came after winning the Asia Pacific Popular Song Contest. He entered the competition at the initiation of Eric Poon Kwong Pui who wrote the song, "Lyrics". Towards the ending of the song, Anthony displayed a bravura of vocal improvisations which accentuates the attention of the panel of judges, and the song was awarded the first prize. Like an overnight sensation, Anthony caught the eyes of many recording companies executives, and eventually was signed to Capital Artists Limited. His first album release in 1987 did not help his career. Disappointed, Anthony decided to work as a composer and arranger for many other singers, and established himself to be a music man. His next breakthrough came in 1990 when he was signed to a local record company named Bali Records. The single “The Piano Man” rose to no 1 in all major song charts, and since then doors are open wide.
Between 1989 and 1997, Anthony composed over 300 songs with 42 No. 1 hits.[1] He composed songs performed by famous Asian artistes including Jackie Chan, Faye Wong, Sandy Lam, Anita Mui, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok, Lui Fong, Alex To, Elisa Chan, Cass Phang, Roman Tam, Frances Yip, Deanie Ip, Sally Yeh, Juno Mak, C AllStar, Lisa Wang, Face To Face, Echo, etc.
In 1991, Anthony won the prestigious Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards in the Best Movie Theme category for soundtrack of the movie, "Au Revoir, Mon Amour" (Till We Meet Again). The notable theme song, "何日" (When) was sung by Anita Mui. In 2001, he also composed the score for an award-winning movie Peony Pavilion (遊園驚夢).
Apart from working with good friend Sandy Lam and Lui Fong, he is also known for his musical direction (for concerts) with Anita Mui, Andy Lau, Connie Chan Po-chu, Deanie Yip, Leon Lai, Sally Yeh, George Lam, Elisa Chan, Frances Yip, Maria Cordero, and Roman Tam, etc.
In 2005, Anthony and a well-known Taiwanese composer, Jonathan Lee produced a theme song for the Tsunami relief benefit performance organised by the Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild.[3] In 2007, November, Anthony made his acting debut on the theater stage in a play called "Far Flower World". The play was so well received that it was staged for 8 consecutive shows at APA in March 2008 with an all sold-out performances. In 2008, Anthony's first full-blown musical titled "Snow Queen" was staged in May at Kwai Tsing Theater. Anthony wrote and orchestrated the music, with librettos by Chris Shum. The musical was based on an Anderson fairy tale.
In 2009, Anthony was part of the judging panel for season one of The Voice on TVB.
In 2013, Anthony received the prestigious Hall Of Fame lifetime achievement award presented by CASH, Composers and Authors Society of Hong Kong.
Lun is currently actively touring in concerts.
